Editing Services

Please note: I am not yet scheduling any editing work, as I have a few more business details to arrange. I hope to be up and running by early 2026. If you like what you see below, please check back in, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Overview:

I edit Middle Grade and Young Adult Historical Fiction and Fantasy novels written from a Christian worldview. I am a believer in Jesus Christ, and that will affect how I talk about plot, character arcs, and themes—everything really. If this sounds like your manuscript and the kind of editing you want, please read on!

What you get:

Manuscript Critique

A critique is like a mini or preliminary developmental edit, and it should be just about the first kind of editing your manuscript goes through once you have a reasonably solid and clean draft.

In a manuscript critique, I provide:

— a full read-through of your manuscript

— a multi-page edit letter, probably between three and five pages, evaluating things like plot, character arcs, point of view, and themes. This letter will also provide some guidance about next-steps for your editing process.

 — helpful comments in the manuscript to flag potential areas for improvement, give encouragement, note my “reader reactions,” and help illustrate things I detail further in the edit letter.

— up to one hour of consult time after your edit is returned (I’ve found talking over an edit is the best way of clarifying any misunderstandings or areas of disagreement, as well as a marvelous opportunity for brainstorming.)

The Process

How I Work

Track Changes

I work through Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, and can give you instructions for using it if needed. I prefer Track Changes, and strongly advise it, but if you have to use Scrivener or Adobe PDFs, ask me about that possibility.

Communication

The client and I will interview each other via a video call or phone call before mutually agreeing to go ahead with the edit and signing a contract.

The client will have access to me via email throughout the edit, and the parameters of that access will be agreed to by both of us in the work contract.

When the edit is completed and has been returned, the client will have up to one hour of a video or phone call for questions and further explanation of his edit.

Standards & Preferences

What I Edit

Since I am a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, that affects not only how I edit, but what I edit. My standards for what I edit should not be taken personally. They do not reflect all that I believe to fall in the category of Christian liberty for writers. But for the sake of my own conscience, these are the kinds of manuscripts I have chosen to (or not to) spend large chunks of my time with.

I Might Edit:

I Won’t Edit:

— Please note that Fantasy and Historical Fiction for Middle Grade and YA readers are the only genres I currently edit. For example, I do not edit historical romance or romantacy, nor do I edit science fiction. (These are not my area of expertise or interest.)

— Any manuscript containing foul language.

— Any manuscript containing innuendo or explicit sexual material.

— Manuscripts containing traumatic material.

— Any manuscript containing graphic or gratuitous violence

— Any manuscript that promotes anything I believe to be against God’s word and his law.

If you’re unsure, please ask.
